    Elbow grease

    It was time to get this beautiful old bookcase restored.  What is it called…column, bookcase, cabinet?  We really don’t know.   With our remodel there was no question that, whatever it is called, this was original to the house and would be restored and remain the center of attention when entering the room. Some trim needed to be added but mostly the process was a matter of time and elbow grease.     The final step

    We have completed the last big final step.  When we purchased this old farmhouse, the stairwell had no rails, newel posts, or balusters. We put a temporary railing system in place for safety purposes.   We did not consider the original design of the stairs with no railing to be very safe. Our restoration redesign created a safe and attractive solution. Looking back, this “room” required more time and energy than any room previously restored in the house.  That is one of the reasons is was left as one the last big restoration projects.
